Unfortunately the Pool Tables earn more income than what we spend behind the bar, so therefore the pool tables win.. Sad but true. We are on the hunt for another venue to replace this Wednesday night venue. The Swingtime venue at Camperdown has a Thursday night free in the backroom which is $60 a night, however we will continue scouting around for other venues. The good news is that the restaurant Jacana has invited us to dance in their restaurant once a month (the first Wednesday of the month). Our first one will be 1st Wednesday in July and this milonga will be $15, however you will get a meal from their menu to the value of $15. Dancers arriving after 10pm can enter for $10 and will receive dessert or a glass of wine. As this is the second night club to favour bar/pool tables rather than non drinking patrons, we will unfortunately have to enforce some kind of income to the venue owners. I hope you all understand. The dance floor is beautiful to dance on, it has real tango ambiance with red curtains, candles, fantastic PA, bar and restaurant with fabulous meals that are really affordable as well as a little stage for our guest musicians which I?m sure we?ll be hosting from time to time. The area allocated to us does not impact on their other clientele so it is a very comfortable and social evening indeed. The whole Hotel has been tastefully renovated and is located on the corner of Redfern & George Street. I parked within 20 meters of the venue and the whole area is very well lit and I felt very safe walking to my car even though it was after midnight. What it means: you go to tangosynergy.org web site register yourself and you don't have to register for Gallery. To make browsing easier when you select Gallery menu Gallery app will be open in a new window or tab. Why should we use tangosynergy gallery? First of all it's got better interface, better management system, differnent themes and space! Our hosting got 350GB space so don't worry about resizing photos (yahoo photo album is limited to 100mb only). Also you can zip up all your photos and upload just one zip file instead adding photos one by one, upload limit for one zip file is 50mb, but it's better to upload several 10mb files just in case if connection fails. Gallery engine will automatically resize images so don't worry about it too. TODO: 1) I have to configure permissions for registered users. Registered users should be able to create albums and add images e.c. 2) Photo migration 3) Modify gallery theme, make it more tangoish :) 4) I got a request to add a forum engine, will try to implement it by the end of the week. So now you can go to http://tangosynergy.org and click on gallery. I've added new photos to Blue Mountains Milonga. Instead you chose the public domain of the Tango Synergy's mailing address to voice your opinions of me. Were you hoping for the majority to jump on the bandwagon for a "public stoning"? Trust me, in my life time, because of the road I chose to take ie, being gay; I grew up being accustomed to this public stoning. So apart from the initial disbelief I quickly discarded it as I have learned to do so many times before. That's what makes us the resilient men we are. Secondly, Tango Synergy's aim. A group of people decided one day to create a social group which will hold milongas for all walks of life. How can I put this any better than the very country you live in. Australia is a land of multiculturalism. Where people from all countries, all colours and all languages are living together on the one stretch of land. Yes I'm not denying there haven't been hiccups, but this is how people learn to co-exist in harmony. We need to learn to give and take and accept others and their own beliefs. Tango Synergy's aim is the same. To unite all tangoist who like Old Traditional, Traditional and of course Nuevo music to dance together under the one roof. This is a positive aspect as it gives us a vast range of music to choose from. Being a DJ is not just about playing a group of songs you like. It's actually quite a talented profession. Do you think that the job of a DJ is just to play their own favourite tunes? No it isn't. A DJ is always looking at the crowd and seeing their reactions to the songs they play. They need to be aware at all times and be adaptive. And don't forget, the crowd can change also. One night the crowd could favour one style and the next the crowd could be totally different. That's why a DJ needs to "listen" to the crowd, to read the vibe, in order to be successful. They also need to learn to not just throw their hands in the air if the crowd responds in the way they hadn't expected. Do you think that all the great DJ's in the world gave up because of one bad night? They've had lots of bad nights to get where they are. But that's how they learn what works and what doesn't. Just like all other professions, those who learn the hard road lessons make the better leaders. Now Mark, we know you've been travelling all around the world tangoing, so you've already got a head start and people do like your style of music, however, now there is a diverse crowd as this is part of what Tango Synergy is all about. So don't let it get to you, because, through learning how to read and listen to your audience, you can do better next time. At the end of the day what counts is that people go home exhausted from having a great time tangoing. As a side note, I think one of our pitfalls is ipods. As the playlist is prepared beforehand it limits our flexibility. So there's a light already shining, Mr Marys actually has proper DJ decks. They're not that difficult to use if you're not concerned with the mixing component form one song to another. If not, then how about using a notebook as this can allow you more flexibility than an ipod. Not having all the songs that people request is not the issue either, if you're ready for it next time..... That of course will be my pitfall, as I haven't been in this area of dance as long as you so I do not have the range of tango music. But should I let that stop me or should I ask around and gather people ideas on what to get..... So anyway Mark, at the end of the day it's all about Tango Synergy's aim of bringing all tangoists under one roof and enjoying the spirit of tango together, so, can we put this behind us and move on? Your DJ contribution to Tango Synergy is still valued. Postcard from Bundanoon The end of November might seem a long way off, but in fact it?s just over 6 weeks till Bundanoon is seized by tangomania. With this in mind, I took a detour to Bundanoon on my way to Sydney on the long weekend. Turning off the highway just past the Marulan truck stop, you follow the Highland Way through lush forest, alongside cosy farm cottages, past Shangri La (apparently!) and roll into town conveniently opposite the Bundanoon Soldiers Memorial Hall, the scene of our big BASH milonga. The Hall dominates the centre of town, and is literally a hop, skip & a jump across from the railway line. The solid brick exterior of the Hall doesn?t look too promising but inside, the hall still retains art deco touches with ?lest we forget? etched into a pastel rainbow of arches, and upturned shell lights adorning the walls. The mirror disco ball appears to date from a later era, as does the state-of-the-art sound system which was installed in an overhead balcony in AD2007. The floor (an all important aspect to dancers) is an unpolished wooden floor, with plenty of room for tables & chairs surrounding a generous ronda. Bundanoon itself is a mixture of quaint and trendy, and operates at an incredibly relaxed pace (except when you find yourself crossing the railway line as a train approaches). Allow yourself some time to check out the nic-nac stores, the butchery that does a roaring trade in haggis and the bookshop with the intriguing name of ?The Two Brown Cats? (who incidentally were nowhere to be seen). There?s also an excellent selection of caf?s ? and what visit to Bundanoon would be complete without coffee & cake in Ye Olde Bicycle Shoppe? While you?re there, why not hire a bike, coast down the hill to Morton National Park, check out the spectacular views over the Shoalhaven River, then slog back up the hill in time for dusk to check out the glow worm glen. Convinced? If so, then reserve your milonga ticket through Karen now! What a great night we had - I taught combinations of sacada's and giro's and just had a ball! Also, I taught some very basic things too :-)) The students were very appreciative of my explanations and reasoning as to how the combinations worked and why - then showing all the options with some colgada's as well. Anyway, you guys are the ones that I wanted to share this information with - it has been exciting for me here in BsAs and I really don't want to come home, but I am looking forward to coming home! I will be back on the 20th to leave again on the 22nd for Sydney as Jules and I have been asked to teach at a Tango Retreat on that weekend and then will see most of you the week after that! I am still on a high from all the sights of Bundanoon, sounds of the country and tango music, new friends made and of course 14 hours of beautiful Argentine Tango across the entire weekend. The town was very welcoming and we just loved the Soldiers hall ? (many thanks to Linda from Canberra who discovered it), which was a perfect venue for our 2 workshops, 2 practicas and milonga (did I tell you it was all for the total cost of $40). Damian?s workshops were a hit. We?ve taken away some fantastic drills that will improve our basics together with some advanced moves directly from Gustavo & Chicho. This event will definitely be run again annually and possibly bi-annual due to its success. If you missed it this time, make sure you don?t miss it next time. It was one big tango weekend party, particularly since many of us stayed in the same hotels and were able to mingle at dinner, breakfast & lunch. I have a number of photos which I will load up onto our website as soon as I can. Thanks for all of you who did come along and be a part of this fantastic event. It truly has been a wonderful year of tango and it brings me great delight to see so many people openly enjoy our events. From the weekend in the Blue Mountains at the gorgeous Carrington Hotel to the Southern Highlands weekend at Bundanoon together with our Canberran friends. To the open air milongas held at the Leichhardt Italian Forum and weekly practicas at MrMarys. It has been absolutely our pleasure to organize these events when so many of you have supported them. Next year will be more of the same together with some surprises and we look forward to seeing the familiar faces come along together with some new faces for some real community tango dancing opportunities.
