Many of you joined us for our spectacular New Year's Eve party at the Tango Room. The venue was richly decorated in Moulin Rouge theme, dripping with organza draping, candelabras and red velvet, and there were plenty of stylish costumes to match. Around 60 tangueros attended, filling the deck with movement until the early hours. What a superb culmination of a fantastic year for Tango Synergy! We've seen our regular milongas move from Mr Mary's in Redfern to Farsaci in Leichhardt, with a massive growth in membership and regular attendance making it one of Sydney's most popular weeknight milongas. The Yuletide weekend in Katoomba and the Bundanoon BASH were highlights of the year, and December saw a fun Christmas party, our first outdoor milonga for the summer, a lovely Christmas Eve, and of course the grand finale of New Year's Eve. In 2009 we have many more events planned for you to continue dancing with Synergy - the association created by dancers, for dancers. Milongas Our weekly Wednesday milongas will continue to be held in Leichhardt. During the summer and autumn, we'll be dancing outdoors at the Italian Forum on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month and indoors at Farsaci restaurant on other weeks. The outdoor milonga runs from 7.30 to 10.30pm, a large shoe-friendly dance floor is provided, and entry is by gold coin donation. This week we have DJ Sonny spinning the tunes for your dancing pleasure. Members receive a generous discount at Dante's Restaurant. On alternate weeks (and in wet weather) we dance at Farsaci's Italian Restaurant, 198-200 Norton St, from 8-11.30pm. Here you can enjoy a meal and a glass of wine, and for members who dine in, the milonga is free! Otherwise it's just $5 (members) or $8 (non-members). A special afternoon milonga will be held on Australia Day, Monday 26th January, at the Italian Forum from 4-8pm. Workshops Damian Thompson and Julianne Martens are coming to Sydney on the Australia Day weekend to deliver 6 workshops in a variety of styles and levels. You may remember their relaxed but precise dancing and teaching from the 2007 Bundanoon BASH. The workshops are only $20 each, or for Tango Synergy members just $15 ? cheaper than an average class! It's all happening on 24-25 January at The Tango Room in Paddington. Classes limited to 20 for lots of time working together, so click on the link below to register: *http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?key=pEsaUU-K0IRQAqEStwTq7fw * Lost and Found A white scarf was lost at the Christmas Eve milonga. If you found it, please contact us, and bring it along to the next milonga. Also, an AFTRS cap and two fans have been left behind at milongas. Get in touch to reclaim them. Transport Help wanted Do you have a car with roofracks? Synergy would love to hear from you! With so many outdoor milongas coming up, we'd like to share around the task of transporting our portable floor, usually just between Leichhardt and Balmain. Please let us know if you can help on the odd occasion. Tango practice facility The Tango Room is a studio in Paddington that is available for hire for tango practise sessions. Discounts are available for Tango Synergy members. If you didn't already see the venue at our Moulin Rouge party, you'll be able to check it out during Damian and Julianne's workshops. Contact Chris on 0407 254 942 for info and bookings. If you want to challenge yourself and extend your dance repertoire, join Rachel's bellydance classes beginning at the Tango Room and other locations in late January ? contact 0403 771134 or *http://www.inspirebellydance.com.au*. Other supporters As well as Farsaci and Dante's restaurants and The Tango Room, Tango Synergy has been given support in 2009 by many people and organisations. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank them once again and encourage you to support them in turn. . Ash's Caf?, 86-88 Bayswater Rd, Rushcutters Bay ? fantastic coffee, and their pizza and wine deal is yummy and good value! . Steve ? Massage is Therapy ? offering Tango Synergy members $10 off their first massage. . Flowers by Teresa . Yoga by Stefanie Glasenapp . Pedro Collombi from the Argentine Consulate . Tertini Wines . Bundanoon Hotel If you are your business would like to contribute to Tango Synergy or offer members a discount, let us know! Membership Still not a member? It's time to join! For only $40 a year, you'll receive discounts at all Synergy events including regular milongas, special milongas and workshops, discounts from some of our supporters, plus other benefits such as the opportunity to DJ, to hire our dance floor and music for your own party, and best of all being part of a growing community of dedicated dancers. All money received goes back into the association to obtain assets that you can use (floor, sound system, ipod) and put on the great events that you've seen for the past year. Thanks for your support and here's to more dancing in 2009! Best wishes from the Tango Synergy committee! (Apologies for off-topic and cross-postings) I have an exciting venture to share with you: I have just started a bellydance school! I'm writing to invite you (and partners, friends and colleagues) to come along and give it a try at a free taster class! Bellydance is a great for of exercise for women of all ages and fitness levels (and men too!) - it improves co-ordination, body awareness, core strength, posture and flexibility, and can help with back pain, period pain and weight loss. For Tango dancers, it can definitely help with dissociation and balance too. Plus, because it's not a partner dance, there's no waiting for someone to ask you for a dance! It also has the benefit of encouraging you to understand and interpret music for yourself, which could make you a more active and engaged follower when you dance tango. Not to mention it?s great fun! The taster classes will be held on Tuesday 27 January at The Tango Room in Paddington, and Thursday 2 January in Rozelle, with Term 1 classes beginning the following week at the same venues. No obligation to sign up for classes. Plus, for current Tango Synergy members I'm offering a discounted term rate of $125 for 10 classes, instead of $140. Bookings are required, so please contact me by email or phone to reserve your spot! New businesses get going mostly through word of mouth. As well as considering trying it for yourself, I'm hoping you can do me the favour of forwarding this flyer (attached) and information (below) on to any friends and colleagues who you think might be interested in learning bellydance. Get a whole group together and I can schedule a class just for you! Please check my website http://www.inspirebellydance.com.au for more information. I'm looking forward to sharing my (other) dance passion and inspiring people to dance. Warm regards Rachel Bond PS: Do let me know if you have a good place to put hard copy flyers/posters, and also if you have any brilliant marketing ideas to share with me! -- INSPIRE! I plan to retire next year, and would like to explore Sydney as a place to live part time. I have been to Buenos Aires 3 times, the last time for one month in Nov. 08. I would like to find a room to rent within the public transportation zone. If anyone is interested, please drop me a line for further e-mails. Looking forward to meeting everyone on the dance floor. My e-mail is drobinson39 at wi.rr.com. News: Tango Synergy milongas changing to Tuesday nights Starting in 2 weeks? time, on 17 March, Tango Synergy?s weekly milongas will be switching to Tuesdays ? still at the same venues, Farsaci Restaurant and the Italian Forum. Tango Synergy was approached last week by Patio de Tango, who had been seeking a new venue for their Tuesday night milongas. They were only able to find a venue for Wednesdays, and asked us if we would be able or willing to switch our milongas to Tuesdays to avoid clashing. Tango Synergy?s purpose is to support and grow the Tango community, and so we felt it was in the community?s best interests to make the change and avoid dividing dancers between two milongas on a weeknight. Fortunately, our venues did not mind us changing days. And so, from 17 March, Tuesday night is Synergy night! Although this might come as a surprise, we hope you agree that we made the right decision, and that you are able to continue coming along to our milongas on Tuesdays. In line with our goal of promoting tango for our members, we intend to keep working in partnership with all Sydney?s tango schools. Carrington Yuletide weekend: save the date! One of Tango Synergy?s signature events, the Yuletide weekend of Tango in the Blue Mountains, will be taking place this year from July 3-5. It?s guaranteed to live up to our tradition of being an elegant weekend to satisfy the most ardent devotees of Tango! So save the date and keep an eye out for more details in the coming weeks. In-Reply-To: Message-ID: Dear Tango Synergy Members, Tango Synergy Inc is proud to announce that it is the new owner of SydneyTango. SydneyTango grew from the passion of one man, Robert Clancy, to provide a comprehensive listing of local tango events and support live tango music. With the invaluable support of dedicated volunteers over the years, SydneyTango.com.au has developed into an indispensable web resource, and its milongas are appreciated as a meeting place for dancers and teachers from all schools. After many years of service to the tango community, Robert has decided to hand over the reins of this organisation to Tango Synergy. Tango Synergy Incorporated is a non-profit association, originally established by a core of enthusiastic dancers and now boasting over 100 members. Synergy's aim is to promote Argentine Tango in Australia and to bring together dancers from all walks of life and all schools in a friendly, inviting environment. These values and beliefs are very much in ?synergy? with the goals of SydneyTango. Under our stewardship, SydneyTango will continue its unique role serving the Tango community and will retain its own identity, separate from Tango Synergy. Importantly, all SydneyTango's services, including the calendar, forum, and milongas, will be maintained. We warmly invite all tangueros to join us at the upcoming SydneyTango milonga, at Concord RSL Club on Saturday 30th May. As you have come to expect, the milonga will feature a superb floor, live music from tango orchestra Fuego Lento, and beautiful traditional music provided this month by our guest DJ, Fabian Conca. More details are available - you guessed it - on the SydneyTango calendar! http://www.sydneytango.com.au/sydneytangomilongas/may.html We also wish to advise that on Wednesday, we will be clearing the SydneyTango Forum of its history, discussions and announcements to date, and requiring authentication of email addresses before new posts can be made. Our motivations for doing this are several. * To ensure that posts are only created by users with valid email addresses, reducing any possible abuse of the Forum. * To provide a ?clean slate? free from past discussions * To protect the identity and security of past users and the views they have expressed. This will require you to authenticate your email address / login, and resubmit any current posts. We apologize for any extra work this will incur for you and hope you understand the need for this to occur. Please note that the SydneyTango Calendar is unaffected by this change and will continue to provide a complete and unbiased listing of every Tango event in Sydney. Tango Synergy and SydneyTango, in collaboration, look forward to an exciting future for tango in Sydney! Katerina and I will be moving to Nelson, NZ soon. We will miss you all, it's been a pleasure to be part of the Sydney tango scene. We are going to leave our mirrors behind though. The big one is 81 x 196. It's got a small bit broken in one corner but the rest of it still works. The little one is 90 x 110, no damage. Free to anyone who wants to practise tango or to do anything else with a mirror! The big one fits in my car, so if transport is a hassle I can probably help. Tangazos ...
